Two goals from Phil Jevons and another from Marvin Elliott gave Championship Bristol City a 3-0 victory at Griffin Park in the First Round of the Carling Cup.

Brentford gave their opponents, from two divisions above, a scare, especially during an entertaining first period, but a headed opener from Elliott and a powerful Jevons goal gave the visitors a 2-0 half time lead and the win was secured when Jevons added a third late on.

City's first goal came just past the quarter hour when The Bees failed to deal with a corner.

The set piece had initially come after a fine save by Brentford stopper Ben Hamer when Enoch Showunmi got the better of Adrian Pettigrew and when the ball came in Elliott rose, almost unmarked, and his header found the back of the net via a deflection off Grant Basey.

Although it was City who got their noses in front it was Brentford who had the better of the early chances, Alan Connell should have scored when Sammy Moore found him in space ten yards out but he placed the ball wide of the post.

And Charlie Ide brought a sharp low save from Chris Weale while Moore did likewise with a dipping effort from 25 yards.

Scott Murray shot narrowly wide; Jevons curled an effort narrowly off target and Showunmi miss-kicked when well placed while Basey had an effort deflected straight at Weale at the other end.

As the first half was drawing to a close Jevons picked the ball up after a long run from Liam Fontaine, he skipped past a couple of challenges and lashed the ball into the top corner to score a fine goal.

With a two-goal lead City were able to control the match in the second period and the hoped-for Brentford fight back never materialised.

Jevons had a goal ruled out for offside and Alex Russell curled a free-kick narrowly over the top while Hamer saved well from Fontaine after another run from deep.

Brentford were pushing for a way back into the game, John Mackie had a header well saved from a Moore free kick and the Bees skipper fired over the bar soon after.

But it was City who had the better of the play and created the better chances, Jevons had a shot saved, Lee Trundle fired into the side netting and Kevin Betsy fired across the face of goal.

The Robins third, which was thoroughly deserved, came with three minutes remaining when a Russell free kick flew across goal and Jevons turned it home at the far post.

The City hit-man could have added a third but shot wide from a Bradley Orr cut back and City had to be content with a 3-0 win.
