Brentford crashed out of the FA Cup in the first round for the second successive season, as a goal from a corner in each half gave League One side Luton the win at Griffin Park.
Terry Butcher was forced to make three changes to the side that lost at Peterborough on Saturday.
Goalkeeper Simon Brown was suspended for one match following his sending off, and was replaced by Clark Masters, who made his first full start of the season.
Loan signings Ryan Dickson and Emile Sinclair were not eligible to play, however Sammy Moore was, and returned from injury to start in midfield, alongside the recalled Alan Connell, with Lee Thorpe used as the loan front man.
Youth team striker Lanre Oyebanjo was named as a substitute alongside fellow youth team member Seb Brown.
The game seemed to take an eternity to spring into life, the first quarter of an hour peppered with mis-placed passes and long balls from both sides, with little consequence.
The first real chance fell to the visitors on 14 minutes. Matthew Spring wriggled free from a melee of players in the penalty area and swung his foot at the ball from six yards. His mis-hit shot initially seemed to deceive Masters, but the Bees' keeper recovered superbly to tip the ball wide of the post.
On 18 minutes the Bees had their first chance - Thorpe controlled a long clearance well and laid the ball off to Glenn Poole who took a touch before unleashing a trademark dipping, swerving drive, which cleared Dean Brill's bar by inches, with the Luton keeper not looking entirely comfortable.
Two minutes later Drew Talbot shot harmlessly wide following an Andrew flick, before Bees captain John Mackie left the field temporarily with blood coming from a wound in his head.
Soon after Mackie returned, the Hatters were forced into a substitution, Darren Currie replacing the injured Don Hutchison.
On 28 minutes Andrew cut inside Darius Charles but fired his shot high of Masters' goal, before, with Mackie again off the pitch receiving treatment to his head injury, David Bell went on a mazy run, and his shot from 18 yards was deflected for a corner off Matt Heywood's knee.
Jaroslav Fojut then headed over from the resultant set-piece.
A minute later the Bees conceded a corner when Charles attempted to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick, and despite his protests the decision was given in Luton's favour by the assistant referee.
The corner was taken short and as Bell's dangerous cross was flicked on, Heywood was forced to knock the ball behind for another Luton corner.
The next delivery was fired in with venom and met by Hatters captain Chris Coyne, who headed the ball beyond Masters and into the far corner of the net, to give his side the lead.
Moments later the Bees were on the attack, and Sammy Moore went close with a first-time long-ranger which dropped just the wrong side of the bar, with Brill scrambling.
Lee Thorpe then forced Brill into a low save as his header skidded off the wet surface from Moore's deep free-kick.
The now-bandaged Mackie was then forced to change his shirt for the third time having received even more treatment to his head, this time following a clash of heads with Talbot, and right on half-time Talbot failed to capitalise on Bell's sublime turn and cross, heading straight at Masters from 12 yards.
Brentford came out at the start of the second half with more purpose and immediately set about attacking the visitors goal, Kevin O'Connor cutting in from the right and playing in Poole, who hit a fizzer from 20 yards that seemed to fool Brill, who saved with his legs while falling awkwardly to his left - Connell was unable to capitalise on the rebound.
Three minutes later Poole's 25 yard free-kick was expertly tipped over by Brill, although the officials contrived to award a goal kick, with virtually every Brentford player appealing for a corner.
On 56 minutes Poole's long range free-kick was punched clear by Brill, under the close attention of both Thorpe and Connell.
A minute later Dave Edwards was booked for simulation, having flown through the air after a harmless looking challenge from Poole.
On the hour, Masters was adjudged to have failed to keep a long deflected ball down the line in play, and a corner was awarded.
From the corner, Heywood cleared with a header, but only as far as Fojut, who slammed his shot into the floor, the ball looping over Masters and into the far corner to double the lead for the visitors.
The Bees made a double substitution with 20 minutes remaining, Gary Smith and Ricky Shakes replacing Craig Pead and Alan Connell respectively.
On 74 minutes Currie flashed a shot across goal, before Mackie was forced to retire with blood once again seeping from his head wound - he was replaced by Karleigh Osborne.
Three minutes later Charlie Ide had a strong claim for a penalty turned down, when he appeared to be bundled over off the ball in the area by Coyne.
On 80 minutes Kevin O'Connor lost possession in midfield, which allowed Currie to break down the right. His cross was met by Talbot, who saw his sharp right-footed volley crash against the foot of the far post, and to safety.
Moments later Masters easily saved a straight low drive from Chris Perry.
Brentford stepped up for the remainder of the match but couldn't break Luton down - Shakes failing to latch onto Thorpe's knock-down after a patient build-up, and Thorpe failing to get his head on a Moore cross, in what was effectively the last meaningful action of the match.
The result means that Luton go on to to play Nottingham Forest at home in the FA Cup second round, with Brentford's next match against Morecambe in the league next Tuesday.
